A South Australian Adventure

A South Australian Adventure

Bringing in the New Year in South Australia made for a strong start to 2020. Having Grace on our side of the planet was a great excuse to take a couple of weeks away from Sydney (albeit while skirting bushfires). We began in Victor, toasting the arrival of 2020 with champagne, visiting every surf shop within driving distance and enjoying doughnuts from the famed Port Elliot Bakery. Three days of swimming, brunching and laying out later, we were on our way to Kangaroo Island.

While we shared our time on the island with bushfires that ended up completely destroying most of the western side, we were extremely lucky with the arrival of a cool change and a shift in winds. Given that we were unable to explore Flinders Chase, we spent our time touring wineries (including False Cape and Dudley) and Kangaroo Island Living Honey. Hearing about the impact of the fires that had so recently devastated livelihoods on the Island made it all the more important to show our support for local businesses. As the weather cleared, we got the opportunity to visit the most beautiful beach I have ever seen, Pennington Bay. Our last morning was spent out fishing on Alice’s uncle’s boat, peering through clear water for crabs and in my case learning how to cast.

We finished our trip at Alice’s home in Adelaide, where she had the opportunity to show us around her city. Our first day saw us touring her university, grabbing lunch at her favourite study spot (Caffiend) and exploring the art gallery. We drank espresso martinis at Loverboy, danced to 80s classics at Crybaby and showed Grace Aussie shopping down Rundle Mall. Perhaps it wasn’t the best idea to conquer Mount Lofty the night after we had gone out, but lots of water and an overpriced toastier saw us to the top. At least we could sleep on the flight!

I feel so lucky to have spent so much time with two people I haven’t had the chance to be reunited with since late 2018. Huge thank you to Grace for taking the plunge and travelling almost two days just to spend a few weeks with us. Another thank you to Alice for not only putting us up for most of our trip, but also driving us around everywhere and being the most incredible tour guide. Below is a little video I put together of our trip – here’s to starting 2020 off the right way!
